ANALYSIS

Concept analysis paper help.

A concept analysis is one of the more misunderstood assignments in graduate nursing, because it looks like a definition exercise and is not. You are producing a defensible account of what a concept is, drawn from how the literature uses it, with the boundaries tested by cases that sit near the edge.

Name the method and follow it

Walker and Avant, Rodgers, Schwartz-Barcott and Kim — programs usually specify one and each has a different sequence. Saying which you used, and following its steps in order, is a scored expectation rather than a stylistic choice.

Papers that produce the right sections without naming a method read as though the structure was borrowed, and a marker who teaches this will notice. The method also tells you what to do when the literature disagrees with itself, which is the situation you will actually be in.

Attributes come from the literature, not from intuition

The defining attributes are the characteristics that appear consistently wherever the concept is used well. They are derived by reading across sources and noticing what recurs, not by deciding what the word means and then finding citations that agree.

This is the part that distinguishes a strong paper. A weak one asserts three attributes and cites something for each; a strong one shows how the attributes emerged from the usage and acknowledges where sources differ.

The cases exist to test the boundary

A model case is easy and does little work. The borderline, related and contrary cases are what demonstrate you understand where the concept stops, and they are where most submitted papers become thin.

A borderline case should genuinely be arguable — it has some attributes and not others — and you should say which and why. A contrary case that is obviously unrelated proves nothing; one that is nearly the concept and fails on a single attribute proves a great deal.

The last thing worth saying about these is that they reward reading breadth more than almost any other assignment. A concept used in three disciplines will carry three different emphases, and noticing the difference is frequently where the paper becomes interesting rather than merely competent.

Three steps, then the record keeps itself.

STEP 01

Send the concept and the method

Which concept, which analysis method your program names, and the rubric it will be marked against.

STEP 02

Get the attributes derived

Drawn from how the literature actually uses the concept, with disagreements between sources named rather than smoothed over.

STEP 03

Test the boundary

Cases built to probe where the concept stops, which is where these papers are usually thinnest.

Queries on record.

Which analysis method should I use?

Whichever your program names, and check the assignment rather than assuming, because the sequences differ meaningfully. Walker and Avant is the most commonly taught and the most prescriptive about cases; Rodgers is evolutionary and more interested in how usage has changed over time. Following one properly matters more than which one you follow.

How many sources does the analysis need?

Enough to show a pattern of usage, which usually means drawing across disciplines rather than only within nursing. A concept used in psychology, sociology and nursing will show different emphases in each, and noticing that is frequently where the interesting part of the analysis is. Your rubric may also state a minimum.

What makes a borderline case good?

That it is genuinely arguable. It should contain some defining attributes and clearly lack at least one, and your job is to say which and explain why that absence puts it outside the concept. A case that is obviously in or obviously out tests nothing and is the commonest weakness in these papers.

Do I need empirical referents?

Most methods require them and most students treat them as an afterthought. They are how you would recognise or measure the concept in practice, which is what makes the analysis useful rather than merely tidy. Where a validated instrument exists for the concept, naming it is usually the strongest possible answer to this section.

Can a concept analysis be a capstone?

In some programs yes, more often as a component of one. Where it stands alone it needs to be considerably deeper than a course assignment, with a wider literature base and a clearer argument for why the concept needed clarifying. Confirm what your program expects before choosing it as a project.
