The check is not a proofread. Each reference is retrieved, the cited portion is read, and it is compared against the sentence in your draft that leans on it. That catches the three failures in one pass, and it is the only method that catches the third at all.
Fabricated references are now common enough that this is standard rather than cautious. A generated list produces plausible authors, a real journal, a volume and a page range that resolve to nothing, and a reference manager formats it as beautifully as a genuine one, because formatting is the only thing it does.
Mismatched is more common than missing
The failure students rarely anticipate is a real, retrievable, correctly formatted source attached to a claim slightly wider than the one it supports. A finding that held in one population under particular conditions gets cited as though it held generally.
Markers notice, and it costs more than a formatting error because it reads as carelessness with evidence rather than with style. Where this happens the fix is usually to narrow the sentence rather than to find a different source.
Then the formatting, which is the easy part
Against the system your assignment names rather than a general guide, and with attention to the entries nobody practises: a chapter in an edited collection, a source quoted inside another source, anything undated, anything translated.
Ordinary journal articles cost almost nobody a mark. Those four categories cost people marks in every course, and they are what a graduate reading list is largely made of.
It is also the failure most likely to survive every other check you run. A spelling tool does not read sources, a citation manager does not read claims, and a similarity report has nothing whatever to say about whether a real paper supports the sentence attached to it. Only somebody opening both notices, which is why it is done by hand here.

What is the fastest way to spot a fabricated reference?
Search the exact title in your library and in a general search. A real paper appears in at least one of them within seconds; an invented one produces near-misses with different authors or a different year. If the DOI does not resolve, that is close to conclusive. The whole check takes under a minute per entry.
My citation manager formats things wrongly. Why?
Because managers rely on the metadata attached to a record, and that metadata is frequently incomplete or wrong, particularly for book chapters, reports and anything translated. The tool is not making a judgment, it is rendering what it was given. Anything unusual should be checked against the style manual by hand.
Is a secondary citation acceptable?
It is permitted in every major system and it is a weak position, because it tells your marker you did not read the source you are relying on. Where the original is genuinely unobtainable, use the correct secondary form. Where it is obtainable in ten minutes, obtain it — this is one of the cheapest quality improvements available in academic writing.
How current do my sources have to be?
Read your own rubric, since several state it explicitly and the requirement varies by course and level. Where a recency rule exists it is a scored row rather than a preference. Foundational works remain legitimate for defining a concept; they are usually the wrong evidence for a claim about current practice, and citing both solves it.
Can you check a list without seeing my paper?
The entries can be checked for existence and formatting on their own, and that catches two of the three failures. The third — a source attached to a claim it does not support — needs the draft, because it is a relationship between the sentence and the source rather than a property of either. Sending both is what makes the check worth doing.
