CHAPTER VII · WESTERN GOVERNORS UNIVERSITY

Western Governors University.

Competency-based means one thing: pass the assessment. We coach to the evaluator’s rubric, and revisions come back fast because we know why they were returned.

What we carry here.

IPerformance assessments to the evaluation rubric
IIRevision turnaround after evaluator feedback
IIICapstone projects and presentations

MOSTLY NURSES, HONESTLY

The largest bench in the hall is nursing — MSN, DNP, FNP, PMHNP, AGACNP and RN-to-BSN. Care plans, evidence-based practice papers, clinical hours, IRB files and capstones are the work we do most days of the week, for people who are on shift while they study.

· Care plans and concept maps· Evidence-based practice papers· Clinical hours and preceptor search· IRB protocols and quality-improvement projects· HESI, comps and certification prep
QUERIES ON RECORD

What WGU students ask us.

My task was returned and I do not understand the comment.

Match the comment to its lettered aspect before doing anything else, because evaluator comments are written against specific aspects even when they read generally. Once you know which aspect failed, the fix is usually adding a clearly labelled passage rather than rewriting, and the resubmission can then be checked against that aspect alone.

How many courses should I put in my term?

Start with what you genuinely already know, because the model rewards demonstrating rather than learning. Courses covering familiar ground can move very quickly; courses covering new material take an ordinary amount of time and no enthusiasm changes that. Adding a course mid-term is straightforward, so beginning conservatively costs nothing.

I keep failing the objective assessment by a little.

Go back to the pre-assessment breakdown rather than revising more broadly. It names the competency areas you were weak in, and a narrow miss almost always means one or two areas are pulling the whole score down. Broad revision after a narrow failure is the most common way to spend a month without moving the result.

My mentor and I are not getting anywhere.

Come to the call with specifics rather than a general sense of being stuck: which task, which aspect, what you have already tried. Mentors carry large caseloads and respond to concrete requests. If that does not change things, asking to be reassigned is a normal request and worth making early rather than at the end of a term.

Does WGU find out?

No. No account of yours is accessed, no evaluator or mentor is contacted, and nothing about your enrolment leaves this hall. Records run against a client number rather than a name, and nobody here submits a task, sits an assessment or logs in on a student's behalf under any circumstances at all.
