REHEARSAL

A mock defense.

The point of a rehearsal is not to practise the parts you can already do. It is to be asked, by somebody with no stake in being kind, the two or three questions that will expose a decision you made a long time ago and never justified in writing. Everything else about the hour takes care of itself.

Being interrupted is the whole point

So the session is structured as questioning rather than as presentation. You get perhaps five minutes to set up the study before the interruptions start, which is roughly what a real panel allows before somebody wants to know about your sampling.

What surfaces is nearly always a decision that felt self-evident when you took it. Why this instrument and not the widely used alternative. Why that exclusion criterion. Why the analysis you ran rather than the one your design implies. None of those are hard once written down and all of them are hard on the spot.

Questions come from your committee, not from a list

Send the names. A chair who has spent a career on instrument validity will go to your instrument first and hardest; a methodologist on the panel will go to your analysis assumptions. Those are predictable and therefore preparable.

So the rehearsal is built around what your specific readers are known to care about, plus the questions your document itself invites: the limitation you named, the study you disagreed with, the decision with no stated reason behind it.

Then the answers get said out loud

Then the answers get rehearsed aloud, because holding an answer and delivering it under pressure are separate skills and only the second one is tested. Saying it until it comes out as sentences rather than as recall is unglamorous work and it is what closes the gap.

Where an answer genuinely does not exist yet, it becomes a fortnight of work rather than a bad afternoon, which is the trade the entire exercise is for. That is also why it is worth doing early enough for a fortnight to exist.

The confidence that follows is real, and it is a side effect rather than the aim. Somebody who has already been asked the hardest available questions, and answered two of them badly in private, walks into the room knowing roughly where the floor is. That changes how the whole hour goes.

Three steps, then the record keeps itself.

STEP 01

Send the document and the committee

Your dissertation or project as it stands, and who will be in the room and what each is known for.

STEP 02

Get interrupted

Real questioning built from your committee's known interests and from the soft points in your own document.

STEP 03

Fix what surfaced

The questions you could not answer become a work list with time attached rather than a discovery on the day.

Queries on record.

How far ahead should this happen?

Far enough that what surfaces can still be fixed, which usually means four to six weeks rather than a few days. A mock defense a week out can only build confidence; one at six weeks can still change the document. If you are close to the date it is worth doing anyway, with different expectations of it.

What if I cannot answer something?

That is the exercise working exactly as intended. An unanswerable question a month out is a piece of work with a deadline attached; the same question in the room is the moment everybody dreads. Most resolve into either a justification that always existed and was never written down, or a limitation that should have been named.

Should my chair run it instead?

Where a chair is willing and available that is valuable and different — they know the committee and they will soften slightly because they have invested in the work. An outside reader with no stake asks the blunt version. Both are useful, and the second is considerably harder to obtain.

Does this cover the presentation too?

Yes, though it is the smaller half. Slides carrying a method nobody can read, or twenty minutes of background before the finding appears, are ordinary faults with ordinary fixes. What actually decides a defense is the questioning, which is why the rehearsal is weighted the way it is.

Is a DNP defense different from a PhD one?

The questions are, because the standard is. A practice doctorate is asked whether the intervention was implemented soundly and whether the measure moved; a research doctorate is asked what it contributes and how the design supports that claim. The rehearsal is built around whichever set applies to you.

Elsewhere in the hall.
